Varanasi has the finest silk sarees in India known and sought for its brocade and zari work. Each handwoven saree depending on the intricacies of design take 15 days upwards while some taking a year to be produced. At every stage of the creation, 3-4 artisans are involved making it an extremely labor intensive process. A little bit about these sarees.
- Katan is a subgroup of the Banarasi brocade. Tanchoi is another subgroup.
- Katan sarees are plain weave and therefore the saree is just a continuous expanse of lustrous silk fabric.
- Katan saree are then distinguished based on the design techniques like mina work, butidar (motif), cutwork.
